How to be good at this
This is the numbers round from the British TV show Countdown (and the French Des chiffres
et des lettres before it), which has been quietly training people in mental arithmetic since 1965.
The strategy that actually works
Work backwards from the target. Ask what's near it that you can build — if the target is
734, notice 7 Γ 105 = 735, and you only need to lose 1.
Multiply first, adjust second. Get into the right neighbourhood with a big multiplication,
then nudge with the small numbers.
Look for the factors. If the target divides by 25, 50, 75 or 100, you probably want that
large number in the middle of your answer.
Subtraction makes numbers you don't have. Need a 3 and don't have one? 10 β 7 works fine.
The rules, precisely
Each of the six numbers may be used at most once.
You don't have to use all of them.
Every intermediate result must be a positive whole number — no fractions, no negatives.
That's why 7 Γ· 2 is refused.
